DRIVERS TRAVELING High Street and Tyre Neck Road on Sept. 20 got a surprise concert courtesy of Churchland High School's marching band. Band members took turns playing for passing vehicles and washing cars to raise money for new uniforms. The musical teens have raised $20,000 - almost enough for jackets and trousers. They are working toward hats and gauntlets. The old uniforms have been in service more than 14 years, are frayed from countless rhythmic steps and require dry cleaning. Can you imagine the bill for dry cleaning an entire marching band's uniforms? Yikes! Lt. Richard T. Shea Jr., a hero killed in the Korean War, was honored Sept. 23 at his alma mater, Churchland High School. Friends from his CHS and West Point years spoke of Shea's academic and athletic gifts. Shea, a 1944 grad, was also known for his art, having drawn comic strips for CHS and West Point publications. A West Point classmate called his military career "short but glorious:" Shea organized fragmented units and led them in counterattacks and, despite suffering several wounds, continued hand-to-hand combat to the end.
